Days Gone By

“Free Elmer!” That was the chant heard around Sea Isle City over the July 4th weekend of 1995. Elmer is the 12-pound lobster shown here as held by 19-month-old Evan Foulke and his mother Carlie. Elmer was caught by Mickey Giordano, the commander of the Woodbine State Police barracks and a recreational diver. Giordano was diving off the Ursula in 100 feet of water off of Sea Isle when he grabbed Elmer from an underwater wreck. It was estimated that Elmer was 20 to 30 years old, and folks clamored over the holiday weekend to find someone to take Elmer and return him to his original home. One person was quoted as saying, “Anything but you can’t eat him.” No word if Elmer actually made it back to his salty home.
