Days Gone By

Fall sports are kicking in now, so it might be fun to take a look back 45 years to the fall of 1977. Sea Isle City’s soccer team, the Skyhawks, were Cape May County champions. The Hawks were coached by Jean Rey. Any faces look familiar?

Sea Isle City Swim Club? Absolutely! This is a very rare color aerial of the swim club from its opening summer. It was a project of Freda Development. Located on Landis Avenue between 63rd and 65th streets, the club officially opened on Saturday, June 27, 1959. There were three pools: an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a diving pool and a children’s pool. Family memberships permitted up to

seven persons to use the club and everyone needed to wear a club tag in order to swim. The cost to construct the swim club was $147,000. Converted to 2022 dollars, that is just about $3.4 million.
