‘SUMMER CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS’ AWARDED

Mayor Leonard Desiderio has made an annual tradition of recognizing individuals and organizations that make significant contributions to life in Sea Isle City by presenting “Do the Right Thing” awards, where he acknowledges individuals and organizations. This year, Desiderio used the money from an earlier fundraising effort to send seven children to summer day camps.

Each “Summer Camp Scholarship” recipient was given the opportunity to attend the program that appealed to them most from a list of day camps and sports clinics that are offered through Sea Isle City’s Recreation Department. The children were invited to attend a recent City Council meeting, where they were congratulated and posed for photos.

The recipients and their choices: Jose Fraga, Diana Fraga, Carlos Herrera and Dylan Ramirez will attend Villanova Soccer Camp; Britany Fraga will enhance her creativity at Maverick Art Camp; Danna Ramirez will attend Advance Test Review SAT Camp; and Clare Capone will work on her hoops skills at Casiello Basketball Camp.

LITTLE FREE LIBRARIES TO CHECK OUT

Everyone loves a good summer read, and the Sea Isle City Library is a great place to get books, movies and more.

But if you’re just renting your place for the week, or can’t get your hands on a library card, the many Little Free Libraries on the island are the solution.

Little Free Library is an international organization dedicated to expanding book access to readers and want-to-be readers around the world. Anyone who wants to start a little library is able to register its location on littlefreelibrary.org to be included on its map, but many are unregistered and just out in the community for readers to enjoy. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of local book boxes in Sea Isle for all aspiring readers to enjoy.

Local residents were responsible for the boxes’ construction and upkeep during the busy summer season. The Girls Who Rock and Read, the acoustic duo of Lucy and Rose Marone based in Sea Isle, just opened a Little Free Library on Landis Avenue between 67th and 68th streets, where they performed to celebrate the Fourth of July.

Take a bike ride up to your nearest location to pick out a well-loved title to enjoy on your next beach day. Bring the little ones to choose their own books – the box on 85th Street is especially for younger readers!

Once you’re finished enjoying a title, return it to one of the Little Free Libraries so it can continue to circulate among the island’s fellow bookworms. Or, if you have books to donate, replace them with something new for other library patrons to enjoy.

Take part in this wonderful display of community and enjoy a book today!

Locations in Sea Isle: 93rd and beach; 91st and beach; 89th and beach; 87th and beach; 85th and beach (kids’ box); 83rd and beach; Landis Avenue between 67th and 68th streets; Pleasure Avenue between 67th and 68th streets; Venetian Road.
